In 2026, the United States will commemorate it's 250th birthday and Colorado it's 150th year of statehood and Douglas County will be joining History Colorado in celebrating these dual anniversaries. The county and, more specifically, the Roxborough Area Historical Society will also be marking this milestone with our own historical programs starting in November 2025. The members of the Board of the Roxborough Area Historical Society know that many of you have seen the empty rails to the Silica Brick Kiln and wondered: "Where in heck is that rail car that we were promised over a year ago? We have an obstacle to overcome for which we would like to request your additional support. We also wanted to provide you with an update on the status of the car.
The biggest obstacle we now face is that with this long delay, we have lost our very cost-effective mode of transporting the car. |

Unless we can find a source for a flatbed trailer used for transporting heavy equipment to move the car for little or no cost, we face the need to raise $2,00 - $3,000 to have it moved to our site. If you know of a company or person that would be willing to help us with providing a trailer, please let us know. We have a person with a cab that can pull the trailer and is an expert in transporting rail cars.
As you may know, the car was donated by the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden to the Roxborough Park Foundation in the winter of 2025. Since that time, it has been sitting on old rails in the yard at the museum, waiting for several other higher priority projects to be completed by museum staff and volunteers. We are happy to announce, that our car has been prioritized and moved to the main line in the yard, and is now being prepared for transportation to the kiln site. Before it can be moved, however, the end beams have to be replaced to make the car stronger and safer to move. These repairs are being made now.
We know many of you have contributed funds to this project already and that money was used to install the rails and create the new sign about the Silica Branch. We still have funds for the materials we will need for the restoration of the car once it is on site. But, as stated above, we now need to raise funds for its transport or have a trailer provided to us.
If we need to raise additional funding, RAHS commits to using any license plate holder purchases from the present until we get the car here for this transport (see the separate item in the Echos Newsletter about the license plate holders). If every resident in Roxborough Park donated just one dollar ($1.00) we would easily meet our goal to cover the transport cost. Please consider helping with this effort. Donations, made payable to RAHS, can be dropped off at the Roxborough Park Foundation office or mailed to the Foundation office at 6237 Roxborough Drive, Littleton 80125, ATTN: RAHS.
